As a Tarot reader, it’s most important that I help my clients envision and realize their best future. When we are stuck in a distressing situation we often feel overwhelmed, lost and victimized. The eight of swords represents such a state - a woman blindfolded and bound with eight swords stuck in the ground around her. Staying stuck with thoughts and feelings of dread and despair will only create futile future possibilities. One of the gifts of each Tarot card, even if it seems negative, is that it offers clues on how to navigate forward.
An experienced tarot reader has the ability - and perhaps even the responsibility - to point their clients toward potential solutions. If we see the card and a path clearly, a distressing situation is not as hopeless as it seems. Notice how loose the blindfold and bindings are. Overcoming fear, we can remove the blindfold to ascertain the reality of the situation. If not, we will be like an ostrich burying our head in the sand. By removing the blindfold, we gain courage, see ourselves and the wholeness of our world. In most cases, it is not as bad it seems. By overcoming our inertia and feelings of our own helplessness, we can then easily take off the loose bindings and start helping ourselves again, and regain our own agency. The many swords still stuck in the ground might seem at first scary and overwhelming, but if we begin to cautiously take them, one by one, they can be reclaimed as our own weapons. The swords symbolize our tools, our strengths, our skills, our strategies, our experiences, our allies, etc., in overcoming a difficult situation to move onto better circumstances.
The mindset, the consciousness, the reality and the futures of a person stuck in the eight of swords is so different than those of the person who embodies the energy of the nine of pentacles. It is my favorite card, which I nicknamed the Oprah Card. It represents a state of being which I work to realize and consciously support my clients to achieve. It represents someone who is whole unto themselves. Someone who has their own independence, their own financial means, their own sense of self, listens to their own deep guidance, and is confident of their true nature and worth. This is a person who is connected with all that supports them. It is a card about becoming empowered and sovereign within oneself, healed or healing from any past defilements.
In changing one’s mindset, it allows us to choose the caliber of our future. It takes a lot of work to emerge from “damsel in distress” to a “sovereign queen,” as it is only very recently that the Patriarchal paradigm has been questioned and shifted through millennia. I feel many of us are called to walk this journey and I hope to encourage you on your way…as we are only walking each other home.
There is a saying by Hermes Trismegistus, the alchemist, summing up reality and the laws of manifestation:
'As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul...
